Copaiba – The Powerhouse Oil!

This oil is probably one of the less familiar oils to newer oil users – most have heard of Lavender and Peppermint, but Copaiba is more exotic. It is grown in Brazil where it has a long tradition of use in folk medicine. It is being increasingly studied for a surprisingly wide variety of medicinal applications.

This very gentle oil can be used topically, aromatically, and Copaiba Vitality can be ingested.

Studies on Copaiba

Check out this compilation of studies that looked at Copaiba’s anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antimicrobial, anti-tumor, gastric protective, wound healing, anti-viral, and antioxidant properties!!!
(The article is Brazilian and therefore in Portuguese. You will need to have Google translate it.)

Copaiba is also remarkable because it is extraordinarily rich in beta-caryophyllene, whichis the active ingredient in cannabis. No, Copaiba oil won’t make you high, and no, we don’t suggest smoking it, but many scientific studies have shown that this compound is amazing for a variety of applications. And this study shows is incredibly effective at reducing anxiety and depression.

The second article I posted about Copaiba will help you understand why Copaiba is the main ingredient in Stress Away AND why Stress Away works so very, very well.

Here are some suggested uses for Copaiba:

1. Soothe unhappy teething babies by applying Copaiba to the jawline.

2. Mix Copaiba with other oils or layer it over other oils. It is a magnifier, which means it will magnify the effects of other oils!

3. Apply to bumps, bruises, or swollen areas.

4. Apply to the bridge of the nose to relieve discomfort from swollen nasal passages.

5. Diffuse alone or with other soothing oils.

6. Combine 5 drops each of Copaiba, Frankincense, and Idaho Balsam Fir in a capsule to soothe significant discomfort.

7. After reading the research article about Copaiba’s many effects, consider taking Copaiba in a capsule.

8. Ingest to soothe an upset stomach.

Purification

Purification is a blend containing Citronella, Lavandin, Lemongrass, Rosemary, Myrtle, and Tea Tree oils. It has a very clean, citrus-y scent and is a go-to for our diffuser!

It’s an amazingly versatile oil and its big claim to fame is its power to abolish pretty much any odor anywhere, but its uses don’t stop there!

Check out these ideas:

  1. Place a drop or two on a cotton ball and place in smelly sneakers to completely freshen them.  In a pinch, I’ve just put a drop directly in the sneaker itself.
  2. Spritz or diffuse to dispel any unpleasant odors.  This is perfect for removing strong odors like garlic after cooking!
  3. Put 15-20 drops in a 4 ounce spritz bottle.  Add 1-2 teaspoons of witch hazel and top with water.  Spritz to freshen upholstery, blankets, dog beds, etc.
  4. Apply directly to emerging skin blemishes.
  5. Dilute and apply to the front of the throat to quickly soothe discomfort.
  6. Apply directly to bug bites and stings including fire ant bites.  This can also be used on dogs who have been bitten or stung.
  7. If clothes smell sour from sitting in the washing machine too long, put a few drops of Purification on a washcloth, add to machine, and rewash.  This also works for clothes that are going into the washing machine smelly!

R.C. for Respiratory Comfort

RC is an incredible blend of Spruce, Cypress, Peppermint, Lavender, Pine, Myrtle, and 3 types of Eucalyptus.  It is the oil I grab first when I have any sort of respiratory discomfort.  I’m not going to get into every ingredient in RC, but a quick look at some of the studies I posted about Lavender and Peppermint may give insight as to why this blend is so powerful and effective!

RC is suitable for topical and aromatic use.

Here are some suggestions for making the most of this respiratory blend:

1. Place a drop in the palm of your hand, rub hands together, then tent them in front of your nose and breathe deeply.  This often provides very fast relief.

2. One of my favorite things to do when I’m under the weather is to mix a few drops of RC with about a cup of epsom salt and mix into a very warm tub.  This quickly gets things draining and gets me feeling better!

3. You can put a couple of drops into a bowl or pot of steaming water, make a tent over your head and the bowl with a towel, and breathe the vapors for several minutes.

4. Try making a warm compress by putting a few drops onto a very warm wet towel that you apply to the chest.

5. Dilute a drop of RC with a few drops of a carrier oil and rub onto the chest and the soles of the feet.  This is especially effective on the soles of the feet at bedtime!!

6.  Chances are that if you are needing RC, you are under the weather and could use an immune boost, so consider adding Thieves into your regimen, too.

Soothing PanAway

PanAway is a soothing blend of Wintergreen, Clove, and Peppermint.  (It actually smells a bit like root beer!)  It is ideal for aching feet, tired or sore muscles, neck and shoulder discomfort, knee discomfort.  It is extremely effective and it’s one we are never without.

There are lots of ways to use this oil and you can customize it to your particular needs.  I almost always dilute PanAway with a carrier oil like coconut oil or jojoba oil because it is so strong.  Diluting it allows a very small amount of oil to be spread over a large area.

Here is a list of suggestions for  making the most of this oil!

  1. Simply dilute and rub on neck, shoulders, back, etc.
  2. Dilute and massage the legs of growing children
  3. Add to a homemade sugar scrub and keep by the sink or in the shower for joint discomfort (wrists, hands, knees, etc.)
  4. Make a roller with PanAway alone or the “Triple Threat” of 10 drops each of PanAway, Peppermint, and Copaiba.
  5. Mix several drops of PanAway in a cup of Epsom salt.  Use the entire amount in a warm bath for a soothing soak.  You can also use this in a basin of very warm water to soak tired, achy feet!
  6. Apply diluted PanAway (with or without Copaiba) to the affected area.  Cover with a very warm damp towel then a thick or folded dry towel on top of that for 10-30 minutes.
  7.  Put 5-15 drops in a basin full of very warm water.  Stir very well and allow to sit for 1 minute.  Put a dry washcloth on top of the water to soak up any oil on the surface of the water.  Wring out, apply to affected area, and top with a thick or folded dry towel for 15-30 minutes.  (This is considered the preferable method for children.)
  8. Make a cold compress by applying diluted PanAway to the affected area and topping with a flexible cold pack.  A bag of frozen peas or corn is economical and very effective since it will mold to any shape.
Premium Starter Kit

DiGize for Healthy Digestion!

When I got my first Premium Starter Kit in December 2014, DiGize was not one of the kit oils . . . but when Janine told me about it, I knew I had to have it!  It was in my very first ER order and it’s one of the oils I will never be without!!  There are few things I hate more than the tummy bug.  It’s bad enough for one person, but if a nasty tummy bug hits my family of ten, things become nightmarish pretty quickly.   I’m so thankful for our bottle of DiGize (AKA Liquid Gold).

The Digestive Blend

DiGize is a blend of Tarragon, Ginger, Peppermint, Juniper, Fennel, Lemongrass, Anise, and Patchouli essential oils.  I’ll be totally honest here – very few people will say they like the smell of this blend, but it sure does get the job done!  These oils all have a long history of being used for GI issues and they work together to support the natural balance of the digestive system.  That means that this one blend is effective for digestive issues from one end of the spectrum to the other.  This stands in sharp contrast to medications which are each specific to constipation, diarrhea, nausea, gassiness, indigestion, etc.  These medicines can often be “too” effective – the medicine you take for diarrhea can end up making you constipated, and so forth.  Because essential oils don’t create an unnatural body response in an attempt to cure or alleviate issues, they will bring the body right back where it needs to be!

Digize is suitable for topical and internal use.  There wouldn’t be any harm in diffusing it either, but I honestly can’t imagine that you would want to do this.  (When we have someone dealing with tummy upset of any kind, we will use DiGize topically and possibly internally, and we will diffuse Peppermint.  This combo works beautifully.)

So how exactly can you use DiGize?

  1. Dilute a drop or two in a couple of drops of carrier and rub over the abdominal area when you are dealing with indigestion, flatulence, nausea, etc.
  2.  If you are dealing with bowel issues, it is helpful to massage diluted DiGize around the perimeter of your tummy area.  Massage clockwise to “get things moving” and counterclockwise to “slow things down.”
  3. DiGize can be used on dogs.  Dilute it more than you usually would for a human and rub over abdomen.
  4. Put one to three drops into a capsule with a couple of drops of carrier oil.
  5.  If you don’t think you can keep a capsule down, you can put a drop directly under your tongue or you can put a drop on the pad of your thumb and press it to the roof of your mouth.

Thieves: Incredible Immune Support Blend

If you’ve hung around any Young Living users for long, you’ve definitely heard of Thieves!  We are all crazy about this oil and all of the other Thieves products like toothpaste, mouthwash, household cleaner, dental floss, foaming hand soap, laundry detergent, and more!  Thieves is a blend of single essential oils and contains Lemon, Cinnamon, Clove, Eucalyptus Radiata, and Rosemary.  It has a warm, pleasantly spicy scent (think Christmas) and can be used topically, aromatically, and internally.  It is specifically designed for immune support.

Why do they call it “Thieves”?

The story behind Thieves is one of my very favorites.  Legend tells of a 15th century group of four men who were perfumers by trade but had turned to thievery during the bubonic plague (also called the Black Death).  They went on a massive crime spree stealing possessions off the bodies who had died from the plague.  Despite their intense exposure to the highly contagious plague, none of the thieves became sick.  When they were finally caught, the magistrate offered them a reduced sentence in exchange for information on how they avoided getting sick.  They shared that their knowledge of herbs led them to concoct a powerful blend of rosemary, cinnamon bark, lemon, eucalyptus, and clove which they used to protect themselves from the plague.   The oils in Thieves Essential Oils were based on the legend of the four thieves.

Here are some studies about the oils in this amazing blend:

Antimicrobial effects of Cinnamon oil:  http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16710900

Immune modifying and antimicrobial effects of Eucalyptus:  http://www.altmedrev.com/publications/15/1/33.pdf

Effects of Cinnamon and other oils on respiratory tract pathogens:  http://www.altmedrev.com/publications/15/1/33.pdf

Antimicrobial effects of Clove and Rosemary  http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17562569/

I could list pages of similar studies, but I believe that these make a more than adequate case for why every house needs Thieves and why you will wonder how you ever did without it!

Here are some ways to use Thieves:

  1. Diffuse in the house when there is a bug going around, when you’ve been exposed to a bug, or when you are run down and may be more prone to get sick.  It smells amazing, and with Orange oil it smells like mulled cider!
  2. Apply a drop neat to a tooth to relieve discomfort.
  3. Apply neat or diluted to a cold sore.
  4. Add a drop to warm water and gargle to soothe your throat.
  5. Make a SUPER soothing Thieves Chai – put a large dollop of honey in a mug and top it off with milk.  I prefer almond milk for this recipe, but any milk is fine.  Heat until nice and warm then stir in a drop of Thieves.  This is so soothing and comforting when you are under the weather!
  6. Make a paste of Thieves and baking soda for an excellent mildly abrasive cleaner.
  7. Apply neat to the soles of the feet for immune support.
  8. Make an Immune Roller with 10 drops each of Thieves, Frankincense, and Lemon.  Apply to soles of feet and up and down spine.  (For tiny ones, cut the drops in half and swap Lavender for Thieves.)

The Facts about Frankincense

The word “frankincense” evokes images of wise men of antiquity bearing gifts to the young Christ.  This was no token or ceremonial gift – it was precious both in price and in all it could do for Jesus and His family.   This oil is suitable for aromatic, topical, and internal use.

The use of Frankincense in antiquity is documented with amazing frequency.  It was used very heavily by the Egyptians who bought it by the boatload from the Phoenicians.  It was burned to create the kohl that darkened the eyes of Egyptian women and was heavily used in worship and embalming.  It was used equally as extensively for medicinal purposes.  The Ebers Papyrus recommended the use of Frankincense for baldness, wound care, infections, leprosy, poisoning, snake bites, and much much more.

Frankincense continued to be used heavily throughout antiquity.  The Hebrews burned it as part of the holy incense used in the temple and the Greeks and Romans relied on it very heavily for medicinal purposes as well as in religious ceremonies.  There is no doubt whatsoever that the wise men knew that they were bringing a gift that offered incredible medicinal powers!  With the fall of the Roman Empire and the collapse of trade routes, frankincense fell from common use outside the Middle East with the exception of use in Catholic incense.

Versatile Lemon Essential Oil

I absolutely love my Lemon oil.  The scent and the taste are so bright and fresh!  This versatile oil can be used aromatically, topically, and internally.

While lemons and lemon products are very common now, we don’t really know much about where they were first cultivated.  They may have originated in China or India but by the time of the Roman Empire, they were appearing in mosaics in Italy and Africa and by the fifteenth century they were widely cultivated in Italy.  Columbus brought them to the New World and they are now grown around the globe. They’ve been memorialized in art around the world and written about by Josephus and Virgil.  Throughout history lemons have been prized for their flavor and have also been documented as having a multitude of health benefits.

Bright, Energizing, Peppermint Essential Oil!

Bright, energizing Peppermint is a universally loved oil suitable for aromatic, topical, and internal use.  It has an amazing history!   It was so treasured by the Egyptians that it was used as a form of currency and has been found in ancient tombs and pyramids so that it would be available in the afterlife.  Jesus referenced the value of peppermint in Luke 11:39, “But woe unto you, Pharisees!  For ye tithe mint and rue and all manner of herbs, and pass over judgement and the love of God: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.”

A Brief History:

The very word “peppermint” has its roots in antiquity.  According to Greek mythology, Minthe was a river nymph in the river Hades. The god Hades attempted to seduce Minthe but was caught by his wife Persephone.  In her jealous rage, Persephone turned Minthe into a lowly herb that would be walked on.  Hades was unable to undo the curse but endowed Minthe with a lovely smell so that she would be fragrant even in her lowly condition.  The Romans did in fact use peppermint as a ground cover between paving stones and it has been used in that way ever since.

Peppermint has been extensively studied and researched through the ages.  It appeared in medical texts in Iceland in the year 1240.  It was documented for dental use and as a pest control during the Middle Ages and eventually showed up in the London Pharmacopoeia in the 1700’s at which point it began to be grown extensively for medicinal purposes.  The steam distillation of peppermint began in America in 1846 and to this day the United States produces more than 75% of the world’s supply of peppermint oil!

More modern clinical studies include:

Antitussive (anti-coughing) effects of Peppermint: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/7827436?dopt=Abstract

Peppermint and headaches:  http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/7954745

Peppermint and allergies: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11853178 and http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/25704366

Soooo, how do you use this amazing oil?

  1. Cook with it!  It’s wonderful in hot chocolate, in frosting for brownies, in mocha coffees, and is very refreshing in a glass of water.
  2. Diffuse or inhale in your palms for a quick pick-me up.
  3. Diffuse with Lemon and Lavender for seasonal irritations.
  4. Sip Peppermint water to relieve mild stomach upset or motion sickness.  You can also dilute a couple of drops in carrier oil and rub it on your abdomen for intestinal/stomach distress.
  5. Peppermint can increase retention and focus – try a drop on your tongue, in your water, etc. if you need to increase concentration.
  6. Peppermint is a “driver” which means that it will increase the effectiveness of other oils when layered on top of them.
  7.  Add to cotton balls and put in the path of pests to deter them naturally.
  8.  Apply a diluted drop to the temples to relieve discomfort there.  I like to mix 10 drops each of Peppermint, Lavender, and Frankincense in a roller topped off with carrier oil and apply to the temples and base of my skull.  Instant relief!!

The Basics of Lavender Essential Oil

Lavender has been loved for many thousands of years and is documented to have been used by the ancient Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans. It was so dear to the Romans that the price of a pound of lavender was equal to a month’s wages for a laborer! I’m glad my precious bottle doesn’t set me back that much. 🙂 Queen Victoria was so enamored by lavender that she actually appointed a Purveyor of Lavender as an official government position.

The popularity of lavender skyrocketed during and after the Victorian era. Lavender was carried to America by the Pilgrims and commercial farming in the America was begun by the Shakers who used it in a number of folk remedies which they manufactured and sold. In 1910, Rene-Maurice Gattefosse, one of the founding fathers of aromatherapy, wrote of the application of lavender healing and regenerating tissue in his arm after severely burning it in a lab accident. This incident precipitated a lifetime of study of essential oils. Lavender was used in WWI in wound dressings and has continued to be used around the world right up to modern times.

Lavender has been the focus of countless clinical studies. Here are just a few:

Lavender and job stress: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24238073
Lavender and insomnia and depression http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16520572
Lavender and headaches http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22517298
Lavender and high blood pressure http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17211115
Lavender and anxiety http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19962288

So, what are some ways to use this awesome oil?

  1. Add a drop or two of lavender oil to a glass of lemonade for a super yummy and relaxing treat!
  2. You can use lavender on your pets!! Dilute a few drops of lavender in some carrier oil to soothe skin irritation on your dog.
  3. Add a diffuser charm to your dog’s collar with a drop or two of lavender to calm them during anxious situations such as fireworks or car rides. If you don’t have a diffuser charm, simply apply a couple of drops to your dog’s collar. This works for humans too, by the way. Wear a diffuser pendant or charm on a bracelet to help calm you as well.
  4. You can also rub lavender on your feet, or your child’s feet to help them have a wonderful night’s sleep.
  5. Diffuse it! We love it at bedtime on its own or combined with Cedarwood. It’s also wonderful combined with Lemon or Lemon and Peppermint any time of day!
  6. A drop or two on a cotton ball can help to repel moths or insects. Place them in your closets or drawers to keep moths and insects away.
  7. It is excellent for skin irritations of all kinds!
  8. Lavender is called “The Swiss Army Knife of Essential Oils.” When in doubt, use lavender!
